New Street Names

We the undersigned petition the council to request a change to the process for the consideration and agreement of proposals for the adoption of street/road names in new housing developments in the district. This would allow local communities, in addition to local town and parish councils to be aware of and comment upon new street and road name proposals before these are registered with Royal Mail.

Epping Forest District Council is responsible for assigning official names to new and existing streets and roads. Property developers and local residents may suggest names for new streets and roads, which will be considered against the Council’s adopted criteria. As a matter of courtesy, the Council undertakes consultation with the relevant local town or parish council on all new street/road naming proposals. Local councils may object to a proposed name or make alternative suggestions, which would also be assessed against the Council’s adopted criteria. The Council does not have to accept any alternative suggestions made by local councils. When a suitable suggestion has been selected, the Council will seek agreement to this with the developer.

The petition proposal is to mandate for a publication period for proposals for new street/road names of two weeks, followed by a four week period to allow appropriate consultation to be undertaken with local councils.
